Tom Kerridge is selling a jacket potato for £20 in his pub

Chef Tom Kerridge has passionately defended setting steeper price points at some of his restaurants in the past.

But the chef has landed himself in another social media storm after selling a £20 jacket potato in his Buckinghamshire pub, The Coach.

The public haven't held back in their opinions on the spenny baked spud, with some saying the Great British Menu host is "taking the p*ss."

"But it's a baked potato," said one.

Whilst another wrote: "What's next, luxury beanz on toast?"

However, to call this a simple jacket potato would be doing it a disservice.

The pub, which is based in Marlow, serves the spud with Raclette cheese on top, and it's dubbed 'The Coach Baked Potato 'Raclette with Sauce Reform.' 

Tom shared the potato on Instagram, asking his followers: "Have you tried The Coach's famous Baked Potato?

"This month's features Raclette with Sauce Reform, and let me tell you, it is a work of art."

Tom has come under fire for his premium prices before, after charging £37 for fish and chips at his Kerridge's Fish and Chips outpost in Harrods.

The chef's Market Day Fish Meal comes with a piece of Cornish fish in gluten-free batter, eight fat chips, curry sauce and tartare sauce.

“I’m seen as a man of the people, so when I put fish and chips on for £35, they shout at me for it being expensive,” he said to Radio Times.

“But the people criticising me don’t understand how it’s priced. Fish and chips was always seen as cheap, fast food, and I get that because of where I grew up.”

He went on to explain that “the fish in most chippies is frozen at sea, in a big block, a year ago, then cut up and portioned.”

Tom added that potatoes can be as much as four weeks old, chopped up and put in “cheap oil,” eventually served wrapped up in paper.

Comparing his own food, he said: “At Harrods, it’s line-caught, day-boat turbot.

“The potatoes are specifically sourced for their sugar and starch content, then individually cut up by a person. It’s bespoke dining in the most exclusive and beautiful shop in the world. Of course it’s expensive.”
